Here is how important working memory is to learning new things - working memory at 5 years old is better indicator of learning ability (present and future) than IQ – drop the mic!

Memory has three main parts: sensory memory (input), working memory (use), long-term memory (storage and retrieval).

How does memory work?

Visual and auditory input is first sent to the brain. This stimulus is also subject to additional emotions and feelings at the time as well. The working memory then uses the information to complete tasks in the moment. However, the space is limited in the working memory. Think of it like a post it notes - you have a limited space to work with. Then information can be sent form the working memory to the long-term memory. This is where it is stored and retrieved. The interaction between the working memory and the long-term memory can be thought of as going to the computer, finding what you need and writing it on a little post it as that is all your allowed to carry with you when you go off to do the task. you can come back to the computer, but you have to bin the first post it in order to get the next one.

Why is memory important?

Firstly, the space for working memory is limited, so don't overload it as it can actually slow down the learning that take space. Also, working memory was thought to be fixed, but like many previous assumptions, has now been found to be flexible and adaptive. You alter your working memory based on your habits. A good diet and regular exercise can improve it. Working memory is closer related to long-term memory, so the more you use things in your working memory, and the more you retrieve form your long-term memory, the stronger the memories will become.

Remember, neurons that fire together, wire together.
